Repairing, Rebuilding, Service or Overhauling Detroit Engine

Detroit engine rebuilding is a complex process which requires specialized skills, At G.B Truck and Diesel who have experience of more than 50 years working on rebuilding, repairing, servicing and overhauling Detroit engines in Edmonton.

For the Detroit engine rebuilt, start by preparing the Detroit engine for the overhaul and the counterbore the Detroit Engine core. We should lock in the oil feed and oil drain holes, so we don’t get any foreign material in the oil galleries. Once counter bores are done, we need to put a shim in the Detroit engine Core, that is pretty much the first step in the Detroit engine rebuilding phase.

If we are getting a head gasket done in the Detroit engine repair process, make sure we get counterbore +checked out and piston assembly set up. The rings of the Detroit engine piston are really simple to get on so, there is no up or down on the oil control ring and what we do is to pull that skirt off. Take the expander, stick it in the groove, collapse it all the way, and then just take the ring in the gap and the line it up with the black part. Piston assembly is critical step in for Detroit engine rebuilding phase and that is the reason always use the services of expert heavy duty engine rebuilders like G.B Truck and diesel who have lot of experience rebuilding, repairing, servicing and overhauling Detroit engines in Edmonton.

There is a lot of debate on that but we just go general rule of thumb, we will put one there and put another one at 120 degrees from it, and then we will put another one at 120 degrees from it and there we go, as long as they’re not all lined up. We cannot tell that, the more and more we think about it we know those pistons moving in there, so the technicians who work rebuilding or repairing Detroit engine like at G.B Truck and Diesel at Edmonton normally use this type of style. We have conventional like at 8.3 with a solid pin bore to the rod end, there is an actual bearing in here on this part of the shale. We are going to have a bolt a hole in it.

What we do with our socket extension, we do the same thing for the other one, remember the first Detroit 60 series truck, anything we ever went through and we have seen this broad setup while overhauling a Detroit engine.

Go to one point and set up one piston, put the crank back in this assembly of Detroit engine. We take the cloth, get liners cleaned up that way. Just do not take chance rolling an O-ring or having a leak and having a problem, not properly putting a small thing could lead to a major Detroit engine repair that is the reason we always insist on trusting the experts like G.B Truck and Diesel who are based out of Edmonton, as they have lots of experience in rebuilding ,repairing, servicing and overhauling Detroit engines . Rebuilding and repairing a Detroit engine is complex process, so sometime you need to use un-conventional ways while overhauling the Detroit engine. We will turn the crankshaft a little bit, pull one back out and look at the O-rings to make sure we did not cut any of them and loop them up and stuck them back in there. They are just going in hard because this is just cold. The number on the rod will face the cooler side of the Detroit engine.  Another way we can tell is, there are orientation marks on the rod and that little indentation there is sticking out. It is a protrusion sticking out that goes to the front of the Detroit engine. Checking things like these comes with experience in rebuilding, overhauling or repairing a Detroit engine and G.B truck and Diesel are considered to be the best in Edmonton to do that.

If everything is together right, these balance shafts will both be the counter balance. It will be at the six o’clock position which when the Detroit engine is sitting the right way, it is supposed to be. Its upside down of course they are not sitting at six o’clock or sitting at midnight, so when they are in the correct position the engine can be either at up at Center exhaust on number one, through that center compression which would bring this timing mark right flashlight to interoperate right there. We get zero and we are in between, the X and the X are lined up, the Y and the Y and the Z and the Z. That pretty much completes the first phase of Detroit engine rebuilding process.

Put the rear cover and the front cover on the Detroit engine, put them head-on, get anaerobic sealer, there is a square, there is an oil feed. We will put a new seal in there, tighten the bolts down. It’s kind of tricky, they make a special pilot tool used while rebuilding a Detroit engine or repairing a Detroit engine. We bull gear recess, this part of the bull gear sets in the front cover, this part resets the recesses in the block well.  We are shoving it with a handle on it but we just use the bull gear. We get front cover halfway close and then we just get a couple of bolts in it. We try to leave a little gap between there and when we get it closer and we just shove the bull gear in up against it and then we get a couple of bolts on it and tighten them down. We tightened the rest down

First, the inner race for the bushing says outright on it and we will take it off the real quick. We investable idler off. look at this bushing, put assembly loop on it. We will see an oil feed hole, then it says out right there so we want that oil feed hole lined up with the actual hole, that is feeding oil in. Do not tighten the bolts up on this adjustable oiler yet, this is common mistake technicians make while rebuilding a Detroit engine or repairing Detroit engine. Technicians at G.B Truck and diesel make sure we don’t commit these types of mistakes while rebuilding, repairing, servicing or overhauling Detroit engines. Making sure the alignment of parts is right is of utmost importance while rebuilding or overhauling a Detroit engine, otherwise a small error here could lead to a major repair of your Detroit engine. This one will be time to adjust and we see we mark on crankshaft. So, we are going to line up these marks, the axle through this access hole. We are going to be lining that with this. Bull gear is timed and the adjustable idler and then we can see that these will kind of line up right here with our cam gear. So now we got a bull gear in . This completes the second phase Detroit engine rebuilding.

Now put Camshaft on Blake, be sure you lay these breeches right way. Bolt, these cam bearings down on front and rear number, if it was a sixty series, it would be number one and number seven but if it is a fifty sure, it is going to be number one cap and number five cap. If we read the book, they tell us we do not even lube them. These number and number one and number five on a fifty series, so we look in here. We will see the bearing caps and this is the current style that they say, put silicone right here on the corner of the cap and on the add extra sealant to this area, Thrust the swash plate and there is a racetrack seal. We got to make sure we put that in there. Dry the ceiling surface out, we want the silicon to set up and stick to it and then we are going to torque the one in numbers, we install the number one, four and seven camshaft caps with bearing shells in place to their respective locations.

Tighten it.to ten board studs and out ports bolts on bearings number one and number seven, using tool sore number four, bearing cap out. torque 293 to 108, remove the three bolts holding the camshaft gear pilot tool to the gear case. Remove the camshaft and access the hole, get the front cover off. adjust dial indicator

1 2 C 0 1 2 1 2 2 and a half five thousand, we set it at five thousand straight now, remember we got to multiply it times two, so right around five and we are right around five or six thousand switches. Tighten it up, check it three six or nine o’clock positions, look at the torque specs and put a wrench on the crank and then run around get. We dial indicator set up over, we get us backlash set right. That completes the third phase of Detroit engine rebuilding stage.

Sometimes these Detroit engines really do not have the right adjustments. We do not have accessory drive marks, so we would pin the pump and the flywheel. We just kind of really got to pay attention and watch the rockers and injectors when we are adjusting the valves. Precision is the key in here and people at G.B truck and diesel have mastered the art of rebuilding a Detroit engine, repairing a Detroit engine, overhauling  a Detroit engine and servicing a Detroit engine in Edmonton.

Cylinder fire in order, we companion cylinder, so we companion cylinders on an inline 6, we are going to keep every cylinder equal, so 1 in 6, 2 & 5 and 3 & 4 on in line for, everything on companions equals 5 so 1 & 4 2 & 3. Having said that first adjust our injector of Detroit diesel engine and we got the 81 mm here. That is what it calls for on the serial number. We will have both valves lose but if we are adjusting these valves, back all the rockers off. we know because we had the head resurfaced. stick rocker shafts, torque them down, then we want to start fresh with everything lose. We got to figure out by looking at Cam, we will see over here the injector lobe, this one on number one, dead center compression that means it is about ready to the injector lobe ready to hit roller and shove the injector down to shoot fuel.  We adjust injector. We get it in a little hole in the base of the injector, have a little oil on top of the valve retainer in the spring and that way we can see it. We just wipe the oil off with it set and square against it. So, we set the injector on that one, now we will go the number one cylinder, and set our valves on this Detroit engine like if we are doing 60 series 4.7 liters Detroit engines. Most the time they are eight and 20. Do your exhaust first and then the oil pressure, look at the air cleaner housing, see if it was put to put in there and properly without a dust seal across the top of it, where the cap seals down. Check what seals on pressure reads on oil sensor put valve covers back and finally check the PSI and we are ready to go. This marks the end of this Detroit engine rebuilding stage.

Detroit engine are robust engine and rebuilding, repairing and servicing Detroit engines requires expertise and G.B truck and diesel is a pioneer, when it comes to Detroit heavy duty truck engine repair.

Some Common Problem with Detroit D15 Engine

Some of the common issues on a Detroit DD 15 engine.

1)Low Oil Pressure =After 500000 kms, one could experience some low oil pressure for your heavy-duty Truck. A lot of times what the Heavy duty Truck repair shops are going to recommend you to do, is replace the oil pump and Truck mains. Proper diagnosis of the issue is important. That is the reason people prefer G.B Truck and Diesel ,who have been working on Detroit heavy duty engines for more than 50 years in Edmonton. Although, it is a good idea to check your mains. It is not recommended, nor it is required. What happens with these Detroit DD 15 Engines is, over time the O-rings for the suction tube, that sucks the oil from the bottom of the oil pan, lose their seal by becoming brittle from the heat. So it is an easy fix, dropping the oil pan, replacing all O-rings, putting everything back on and you got The Detroit D15 Engines oil pressure back up. So if you are in that position make sure you are at the right heavy duty Detroit repair shop like G.B Truck and Diesel in Edmonton who Make sure the troubleshooting the problem in Detroit DD 15 correctly.

2)Engine Oil leaks= Go over just a couple of areas that we should keep an eye on Detroit DD 15 engine. One is going to be your fuel pump and other would be the air compressor. The gaskets for those usually leak around 50000 Km. It is an easy fix it is just resetting the air compressor and fuel pump.

Another area is Detroit DD 15 engine oil cooler housing. The housing for water pump and cooler overtime is going to leak. Working in Detroit DD 15 engine is a complex thing and requires expertise like G.B Truck and Diesel. It is an easy fix and what we need to be do is of course reseal Detroit DD 15 cooler housing.

There another big concern, that is the near the rocker box, where it seals on the engine cylinder head. What is going to happen is that lower rocker box gasket is going to end up losing its seal through the same process as discussed earlier.

It just gets hot, it gets brittle and it is not able to seal anymore and over time it just starts leaking.Another thing we would like to mention to is making sure you are using the right oil weight. 15w 40 is what is recommended by Detroit. Sometimes, heavy duty truck drivers use heavier weights during the wintertime. We would not recommend that because what that is going to do is bring the Detroit DD 15 Engine oil pressure a lot higher and that in turn is going to cause more oil leaks for the engines. So make sure to stick with the oil that Detroit recommends.

If you do have any of these oil leaks or any concerns just make sure to give us a shout. We at G.B Truck and Diesel are experts when it comes to repairing Detroit engine in Edmonton

Another thing we would like to cover is Detroit heavy duty engine crankcase filter. Detroit DD 15 engine crankcase filter is down on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is an assembly it is not serviceable and after 500 K, It is a good idea to get those replaced. They carry a filter and they over time, clog up and not let the engine breathe the way it needs to.It is just a good system to have monitoring your engine leaks.
